Biographic Exhibits

In addition to its live aquarium exhibits, GSML has extensive graphic exhibits on the many species of marine animals present, on plankton, on sea turtle biology and conservation and on the varied programs it conducts. The signs and storyboards throughout the facility were all designed by GSML staff, based on their high level of expertise and the extensive marine photo archive at GSML. They describe unique ecological aspects of the Big Bend and Panhandle coasts of Florida as well as life cycles of various species. Exhibits are designed to display and communicate:
- biological diversity at the phylum and class level through live exhibits
- regional coastal ecosystems
- the role of marine life in scientific and biomedical discovery, particularly cancer research, illustrating the value of marine biodiversity to human well-being
- the intellectual excitement, adventure and discovery involved in doing science.
Graphic displays also demonstrate the diversity, beauty and interdependence of the area's unique terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems, including longleaf pine, marine salt marshes, barrier beaches, sea grass meadows and limestone bottoms. The tanks are surrounded by pictures that identify the most common species and major marine ecosystems.
The reverse sides of the plankton panels display art by the well known artist Walter Inglis Anderson, whose works are housed in the Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
